Ahimsa Cerezo is our DAISY Award honoree. Comments from our patient: “I’ve never experienced this level of patient advocacy. I have been dealing with chronic pancreatitis since December, and because of it, I’ve been in and out of the hospital, constantly worsening. It got to the point I had given up on the pain and got used to trying to deal with it with heating pads, and all hope of pain management was out of the question, or at least that’s what I thought due to my pregnancy. I had encountered good and kind nurses as well as judgmental ones. Thankfully, I came across Ahimsa, who was a true blessing.
She truly went above and beyond to help me find a solution and finally get me some comfort. She goes above and beyond for her patients. She showed me so much kindness and compassion. She’s genuinely a medical hero. She advocated for me with the care team, who I understand were doing what they thought was best, but weren’t helping me. She found me at my lowest, unable to leave the bathroom, dying of pain, and in a horrible, humiliating situation. She made me feel like a human being and not just another patient. You can truly see her dedication to helping and her decision to find a stable solution, not just a temporary cure, which I had been receiving.
She fought for me to get on a pain management plan that wasn’t just for the moment, while still caring for my baby. Her determination and devotion to her patients are mesmerizing. You can see and feel that it's not just a job for her. She genuinely cares and ensures that you are recovering and continue to recover after she leaves. It amazes me that she doesn’t just worry or resolve it during her shift, but ensures that you’ll be taken care of after she clocks out. She helped me smile again and finally find a glimpse of hope that I would soon regain my health and hopefully enjoy my new baby. I don’t know how to express my level of gratitude I have towards her. I’m not sure how to explain how low and horrible I felt, and the impact she made that I went from feeling hopeless and alone, holding a battle of emotions and pain, to finally feeling peace, and I have hope again. She’s a true blessing and genuine hero with a heart of gold.”.
