Her positive outlook and knowledge of oncology are precious gifts that she willingly shares with her patients.
I am recognizing this amazing nurse as an unsung hero in the infusion center. Adele goes above and beyond in all that she does for the patients in the infusion center. For me, just a few of the many things she has done are calling, texting, and keeping my spirits up when I was down due to several adverse reactions from the chemo. On many occasions, she reached out to the doctor when I desperately needed additional support. She guided me to go to the ER when there was no way to truly diagnose what was happening with my body in response to the chemo. There were questions such as, Am I having a bad inflammatory response, or was I experiencing an infection? Adele stayed the course with me and kept me informed, but most of all, she cared for me and kept me positive. Her positive outlook and knowledge of oncology are precious gifts that she willingly shares with her patients. She has a calming effect when you speak with her, and this is an immeasurable quality.

One specific example of her support and how she went above and beyond was regarding an issue with an EKG order in the new EHR system. My oncologist had placed the EKG order electronically, but the registration desk could not view it due to the absence of an electronic physician's signature. I would not have been able to receive my EKG that day unless I had an electronic signature on the order. I reached out to Adele because I knew my physician was not in the office, and it was already getting late. Adele reached out to the doctor and placed the orders electronically. Still, when I returned to the registration desk, they could not see the order with the electronic physician's signature on it. Much to my surprise, Adele came running over to the main registration desk to see exactly what they were seeing or not seeing for the order. She got her exercise in for that day as she ran back and forth several times to see if placing the order another way would come across correctly.

Unfortunately, the order continued to glitch, but Adele went above and beyond to ensure I was able to complete the test that day. She went to the oncology office and spoke with one of the doctors' partners, who willingly reviewed her chart. Adele was able to get a paper prescription for the EKG to be done. She wanted to make sure I was ok and knew my fears would be alleviated, knowing this test would be completed before my next chemo dose. The EKG was obtained that day, and my next chemo dose was able to be given 2 days later on its scheduled date. The infusion center has so many wonderful nurses and staff who make the journey less painful. It is a well-run unit with some truly exceptional individuals. I appreciate them all.

In closing, I would like to nominate Adele Holman as a DAISY Award Nominee because she is amazing and truly embodies compassion for her patients and a passion for her career. She does it all, not just for me, but for all the patients in the infusion center who are blessed with her knowledge, skills, and care. Thank you for all that you do, Adele. You are truly amazing, and I am a lucky recipient of care at BHMC’s Infusion Center. I am forever grateful for the difference you have made on this journey to my cure.
