I arrived in Adama's ward after about 8 hours in the emergency department with complications from Covid 19. Adama was my daytime primary nurse, and she immediately made me feel very welcome, almost like she'd been waiting for me to arrive. She was very professional, patient, and all while being very friendly and warm. Despite my Covid status, she always treated me with utmost care and respect, and offered humor where appropriate. Plus, when asked, she shared a few personal details, as one would to a new friend. Her attitude, professionalism, and care were the same each time she entered the room, and she always encouraged me to call whenever I needed help. My experience on the ward in other respects reflected some staffing shortages (e.g., delivery of food and other supplies, responsiveness to queries) as well as understandable concern about dealing with a Covid patient. But Adama never showed that she was rushed, fatigued, or nervous about my virus. And she honestly made me feel like I was her only patient. I believe that Adama is a unique professional in the level of care she showed me. I trust that she delivers the care to each patient to whom she's assigned, with or without a virus.
