She rubbed his shoulder and asked if she could give me a hug. I could never ask for a more amazing, caring person to be there for me that day. She did so much.
My uncle, J, was in the hospital with blood clots and internal bleeding from cancer. He decided that he no longer wanted treatment and wanted to come home with me to pass. I met his nurse, Acacia, upon arriving that morning, while my uncle and I agreed we would do things however he wanted them. He took a dramatic turn for the worse before I could arrange to take him home. A CNA was in the room while I noticed he appeared to be having an episode which was like the one that brought him back to the hospital. She was trying to get a blood pressure and temperature and I told her please, will you stop and get his nurse! Acacia came in, assessed the situation, and she was all about J. She talked to him like family. She rubbed his arm, she reassured him, she also managed to check on me. When the episode ended he was very agitated and the blood pressure cuff was bothering him badly. She noticed and told him, J that thing is really bothering you, let's get rid of that! She asked me if that's what had happened the previous night when I called the ambulance. I nodded, and she said Wow, that must have been really scary. I felt so at ease that somebody understood and made me feel like I was not ridiculous for how I reacted when that had happened. He began to tell me he was having a lot of pain. She was right on top of it. When he began telling me it was returning 45 minutes later, I thought Oh no. Acacia came in immediately and gave him more medication without making it seem like a problem. She talked to me about every step. Let me make the decisions, and throughout everything, treated us and my uncle like family. Never just a blood pressure or temp check. When he passed, she came in to check for a pulse and listened for a heartbeat. She didn't say he's dead or he is gone, she said, I don't hear anything. Being told in that way meant so much to me! She rubbed his shoulder and asked if she could give me a hug. I could never ask for a more amazing, caring person to be there for me that day. She did so much. More than I could even type. She is so deserving of being recognized for the amazing job she does. And J would like to thank her for the dignity with which she treated and gave him in his last hours.
