The very next time he came into the clinic, Abby had created a personalized trivia game just for him.
It is with admiration and gratitude that I nominate Abigail Gothers for the DAISY Award. Abby exemplifies what it means to provide not only clinical excellence but also true, compassionate, patient-centered care. Over the last few weeks, Abby has been caring for one of our oncology patients, a gentleman in his 90s with complex medical needs. During one of their recent visits, it was mentioned that the patient had been feeling deeply depressed at his nursing home. He shared that the environment felt isolating, and none of the scheduled activities were of interest to him. When asked what he enjoyed, he said, “Love trivia”. Abby didn’t just hear those words; she listened. And then she acted. The very next time he came into the clinic, Abby had created a personalized trivia game just for him. She designed questions tailored to his interests in history. She played it with him during his infusion appointment, turning what would have been a routine visit into one filled with laughter and engagement. Witnessing their interaction was nothing short of inspiring. The patient’s entire demeanor transformed; he was energized, joyful, and connected. For that hour, he wasn’t just a patient receiving treatment; he was a man being seen, known, and celebrated. Abby didn’t do this for recognition. She did it because that’s who she is. She saw a human need and met it with creativity, heart, and a little extra sparkle. Her thoughtfulness, empathy, and ability to meet patients where they are emotionally and mentally set her apart. She reminds all of us why we do this work. Abby didn’t just care for a patient’s body; she cared for his spirit. That is DAISY-worthy in every way.
