On the days and nights Abby was working, we felt a palpable sense of relief, knowing my father was in the best hands.
My father spent the last two weeks of his life at UPMC Mercy. After several years battling dementia, a minor fall, though physically harmless, marked the beginning of a rapid decline in his condition. During those final days, my family and I were at his side constantly, navigating the emotional and physical toll of his decline.
Throughout our time at UPMC Mercy, we encountered countless compassionate, skilled, and dedicated professionals, from the emergency room to security, the 12th floor, housekeeping, physical therapy, palliative care, psychiatry, and general medicine.
Every individual who crossed our path treated my father and our family with respect, empathy, and professionalism.
Among the many incredible caregivers, one nurse stood out above all the rest: Abby Dornisch.
Abby’s presence brought an immeasurable sense of peace and comfort. Her compassion, knowledge, attentiveness, and genuine kindness were extraordinary. She cared for my father with gentleness and dignity that brought us immense comfort during a deeply painful time. More than that, she cared for us, his family, with the same level of empathy and attentiveness. On the days and nights Abby was working, we felt a palpable sense of relief, knowing my father was in the best hands.
Despite being early in her nursing career, Abby demonstrated the wisdom, poise, and skill of a seasoned professional. Her dedication and heart are a powerful reminder of the vital role nurses play, not just in caring for patients, but in guiding and supporting families through life’s most difficult moments.
If Abby Dornisch represents the future of nursing, then the profession is in excellent hands. My family will forever be grateful for the comfort and care she provided at such a critical time in our lives.
