August 2026 Honoree
Abigail Commerford, BSN, RN, RNC-OB
LT Commerford is one of the most knowledgeable, strong, and patient-centered nurses in our unit. What truly sets her apart is her unwavering commitment to patient advocacy, her ability to elevate those around her, and her dedication to ensuring every patient receives safe, evidence-based care.
One example that reflects LT Commerford's impact occurred when a patient began experiencing increasing amounts of blood in her urine. A newer nurse recognized the concern and brought it to this nurse. Without hesitation, LT Commerford validated the concern, stepped in, and immediately advocated for the patient by requesting appropriate labs and clotting studies from the providers. In that moment, she not only ensured timely intervention for the patient, but also empowered a newer nurse to trust their clinical judgment and speak up. Her leadership turned a moment of uncertainty into both a patient safety intervention and a teaching opportunity.
Abby consistently creates these moments. At the nurses’ station, when questions arise about policies or clinical decisions, she does not rely on assumption or habit. Instead, she brings forward evidence-based knowledge referencing ACOG and AWHONN guidelines and ensures the team understands the “why” behind what we do. Her commitment to evidence-based practice elevates the entire unit, encouraging others to think critically, stay informed, and remain accountable to the highest standards of care.
As a preceptor, Abby is equally impactful. She takes the time to explain even the smallest details, often re-teaching concepts in multiple ways to ensure understanding. She challenges new nurses to ask meaningful questions and to understand the reasoning behind their actions. She is not simply teaching tasks; she is developing confident, safe, and thoughtful nurses.
Beyond her clinical excellence, LT Commerford plays a vital role in shaping the culture of our unit. She promotes accountability, strengthens morale, and encourages others to be active participants in the patient experience rather than passive observers. When she identifies an opportunity to improve patient safety or care, she speaks up regardless of difficulty because her priority is always the well-being of her patients.
LT Abigail Commerford embodies the true spirit of the DAISY Award. Her compassion, leadership, and dedication to doing what is right make a lasting impact on her patients, her peers, and the future of nursing within our unit.
This nurse is wholeheartedly deserving of this recognition.
