I am honored to nominate Abby Heilman for this award in recognition of the extraordinary care she provided to my father and our entire family during his stay in the ICU following his CABG surgery. From the very beginning, Abby demonstrated a level of compassion, attentiveness, and professionalism that went far beyond what we expected. One moment that truly stood out was when my dad suddenly became confused and wasn’t acting like himself. As a family, we were scared and unsure of what was happening — but Abby immediately stepped in. She was incredibly thorough in her assessment, quickly performing a full stroke evaluation and recognizing that something might be wrong. She promptly paged the physician, which led to the discontinuation of medications that could have been contributing to his symptoms while keeping us fully informed every step of the way. Her clinical expertise was exceptional, but it was her compassion and ability to connect with us that made the greatest impact. She answered every question we had with patience and clarity, easing our fears and providing reassurance when we needed it most. Her presence brought a sense of calm to a very overwhelming situation, and it was clear that she truly cared not just for my dad, but for all of us as a family. Even after her shift ended, Abby went out of her way to call and give me a positive update on my dad’s condition — just to help give me peace of mind. That simple gesture spoke volumes about who she is, both as a nurse and as a person. Throughout his time in the ICU, Abby worked collaboratively with the entire care team, always advocating for what was best for my dad and anticipating our needs before we even had to ask. She provided not just excellent medical care, but emotional comfort, safety, and genuine human connection — which made all the difference during one of the most difficult times in our lives. We are forever grateful for the extraordinary care she provided and the kindness she showed. She exemplifies what it means to be a truly exceptional nurse.
