Never in my life have I felt so vulnerable as a nurse turned patient, and I am incredibly grateful that Abby was my nurse during that moment. Her compassion, presence, and advocacy went far beyond routine care.
I would like to recognize Abby, a PACU nurse, because of the extraordinary care, compassion, and comfort she provided me during one of the most vulnerable moments of my life.
Following my salpingectomy, I experienced an overwhelming and unexpected amount of pain. I have never found myself in a situation like that before, physically or emotionally, and I felt scared, vulnerable, and unsure. Abby immediately recognized not only my physical pain but the emotional distress that came with it. She stayed in the room with me the entire time, never leaving me alone, and consistently made me feel safe and supported.
Abby provided thoughtful and thorough pain management using both medication and non-medication interventions. She offered warm blankets, assisted me with repositioning to help ease the pain, and continually reassessed how I was feeling. When my pain remained excruciating despite these efforts, she did not dismiss it; she escalated my concerns to the provider and advocated for me until further action was taken. Throughout it all, she validated my experience and reassured me that my pain was real and that she was not going anywhere.
At my request, Abby took the time to call my husband, who is currently deployed. This meant more than I can express. It relieved my daughter of the stress and emotional burden of trying to explain what was happening to her father, something she had no idea how to even begin to do, and allowed my husband to hear directly from a knowledgeable, compassionate nurse. Abby helped ease his worry and brought comfort to all of us during an incredibly difficult moment.
She also assisted me to the restroom when I was struggling and preserved my dignity every step of the way. Never in my life have I felt so vulnerable as a nurse turned patient, and I am incredibly grateful that Abby was my nurse during that moment. Her compassion, presence, and advocacy went far beyond routine care.
Because of Abby, I felt heard, comforted, and genuinely cared for when I needed it most. She is truly deserving of this recognition through the DAISY Award.
