This wonderful group of nurses came together to celebrate a momentous occasion. There was a 98-year-old woman on 5 South which was in for altered mental status changes. She stayed with us for over one month. During this time, the staff came to know the patient and family quite well. She had gone through some difficult times and we had all weathered them with her. Near the end of her stay, she had informed us that it was her 99th birthday the next day and she dearly wished to celebrate. The ladies did not hesitate for a moment. You see, they had all come to think of her not only as a patient but as a family member. Lisa picked up a birthday cake and personalized it to celebrate her "99" wonderful years. Athea picked up balloons and created her own decorations to include a handmade party hat and origami flower necklace. One of the things she kept saying over and over during her stay was that she wanted other clothes to wear, so Susan brought in a birthday t-shirt for her to wear on this special day instead of the hospital gown. Angela and Anna bought a beautiful silk scarf for her to unwrap at her party. Pastor Stephen gave a blessing and the floor gathered to sing "Happy Birthday" to her. She kept repeating over and over "Oh, my goodness, I never thought anyone would care so much!". Needless to say, there was not a dry eye in the room. Lisa, Athea, Angela, Anna, and Susan brought so much happiness to this patient and filled the hearts of everyone in the room.
