The Interprofessional OB Baby Boot Camp Team at West Kendall Baptist Hospital exemplifies extraordinary, sustained commitment to compassionate, collaborative, and community-focused care. For the past several years, this dedicated team of OB nurses, partnering with a volunteer OB GYN physician and OB nurse practitioner, has consistently donated personal time and professional expertise to deliver Baby Boot Camp, a free, comprehensive educational program for expectant and new parents in the community.

What began as a single outreach effort has evolved into a trusted, recurring community program, demonstrating the team’s long-standing dedication to maternal and newborn health education. Year after year, the OB nurses have served as planners, coordinators, educators, and advocates, developing evidence-informed content that addresses prenatal health, labor and delivery expectations, pain management options, breastfeeding support, newborn care, and postpartum recovery. Their continuity and presence have helped establish Baby Boot Camp as a reliable source of guidance for families preparing for childbirth and early parenthood.

A hallmark of this team’s excellence is its interprofessional collaboration grounded in volunteerism. The OB GYN physician, Dr. Pucket, and OB nurse practitioner, Cynthia Toledo, most recently, participate on a volunteer basis alongside nursing colleagues, reinforcing education with clinical expertise, answering complex medical questions, and ensuring participants receive accurate, consistent messaging. This collaborative model reflects mutual respect and shared accountability, while visibly demonstrating to families how team-based care enhances safety, confidence, and outcomes.

Over the years, the team has also expanded the program’s impact through meaningful community partnerships. Participants are connected to essential resources such as WIC, the Healthy Start Coalition, La Leche League, and car seat safety education provided by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. By offering the program free of charge, welcoming support persons, and intentionally reducing barriers to participation, the team promotes access, equity, and long-term health for families across the community.

The sustained success of Baby Boot Camp is a direct reflection of the nurses’ leadership and the team’s shared passion for service. Families consistently benefit not only from expert education but from the compassion, reassurance, and empowerment provided by a team that has remained steadfast in its mission over multiple years. Many participants return to the hospital feeling more prepared, less anxious, and more connected to available support systems because of this program.

Through their enduring volunteerism, interprofessional collaboration, and unwavering dedication to patient and family-centered care, the Interprofessional OB Baby Boot Camp Team truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Team Award. Their continued commitment over the years demonstrates how nursing excellence, strengthened through collaborative practice, can create lasting, meaningful impact on patients, families, and the broader community.
