Despite increasing acuity and pace, this team consistently takes the time to connect—to explain, to comfort, and to ensure every patient feels genuinely seen and cared for.
The 4 East Cardiac Neuro team is a powerful example of what can be achieved when growth, compassion, and teamwork evolve together with purpose.
When the unit opened nearly three years ago, the team was new—learning side by side, adapting to new challenges, and building their foundation together. Since that time, they have risen to every challenge placed before them, growing not only in clinical skill but in confidence, collaboration, and shared purpose.
What truly distinguishes this team is that their advancement has never come at the expense of compassion. Patients cared for on 4 East are often facing some of the most vulnerable and life-altering moments of their lives. Despite increasing acuity and pace, this team consistently takes the time to connect—to explain, to comfort, and to ensure every patient feels genuinely seen and cared for.
A meaningful example of this commitment is the team’s implementation of the Emotional Flower, a tool designed to better understand what patients are feeling and what matters most to them. Through this intentional, human-centered approach, the team has strengthened bedside relationships and significantly enhanced patient experience and satisfaction.
Clinically, the growth of 4 East has been remarkable. The unit expanded from managing basic cardiac drips to caring for full IMU-level cardiac and neuro patients. In response, nurses rapidly upskilled—raising specialty certification rates from just 5 percent to 30 percent in a single year.
The outcomes speak clearly: zero pressure injuries, zero CAUTIs, zero CLABSIs, reduced falls, and multiple successful quality improvement initiatives. Receiving the Beacon Award was a significant achievement—but the true success lies in the culture this team has intentionally built together.
4 East Cardiac Neuro exemplifies what true nursing teamwork looks like. Every team member goes above and beyond—not only for their patients, but for one another. This is more than a unit. It is a committed, resilient, and compassionate team that meets every challenge with heart, dedication, and excellence.
