This team didn't just coordinate an event; they gifted an invaluable memory and demonstrated the very essence of human connection in healthcare, providing dignity and profound personal fulfillment at the end of life.
I am honored to nominate the exceptional management and staff of 3 North- Telemetry, in collaboration with the ICU leadership, Dann Raible and Bethany Brough, for the DAISY Team Award. Their extraordinary teamwork, compassion, and patient-centered care transformed a challenging end-of-life situation into a moment of profound joy and dignity for an elderly patient and her beloved partner, truly defining what it means to go "above and beyond".
This incredible story began when a 3N patient found herself in an inpatient setting at AHN Forbes Hospital. This patient and her former husband, who had reunited after divorcing in the 1970s, had plans to wed, having recently obtained their marriage license. The patient's son approached the 3 North management team with a heartfelt wish: to have the wedding take place in the hospital.
Understanding the immense importance of this request, 3 North Manager Mandie Harshman, along with Assistant Nurse Managers Brittany Chedrick and Robby Hawn, immediately sprang into action. Their initial search for an officiant led to a remarkable collaboration. ICU Manager Dann Raible, an ordained minister, graciously offered his services.
The 3 North staff, supported by dedicated Citizens' School of Nursing students, then worked tirelessly to create a beautiful and festive atmosphere. The patient's room was decorated, flowers were placed in her hair, and a special bouquet was crafted. The dietary department, specifically Joe Papalia, played a crucial role by preparing a meticulously arranged and festive cart filled with fruits, drinks, sweets, and cheeses, adding a delightful touch to the occasion.
Before the patient's condition made it impossible to fully enjoy the moment, Dann Raible performed a heartfelt and intimate ceremony. The patient's family shared many happy tears and captured countless photos, creating invaluable memories. Tragically, the patient passed away just a few hours after the ceremony.
The collective efforts of Mandie Harshman, Brittany Chedrick, Charles Hawn, Dann Raible, Bethany Brough, Joe Papalia, the entire 3 North staff, and the nursing students created a beautiful moment that fulfilled this patient's and her husband's deepest wish.
This team didn't just coordinate an event; they gifted an invaluable memory and demonstrated the very essence of human connection in healthcare, providing dignity and profound personal fulfillment at the end of life. Their ability to collaborate across units, utilize unique talents, and focus so intently on a patient's deepest personal wish truly sets them apart. They completely embody what the DAISY Team Award stands for, and I cannot think of a more deserving group to receive this recognition for their unwavering compassion, innovation, and teamwork.
