2 South Team
They took the time to talk with him, reassure him, and include him in the unit's daily rhythm so he never felt alone.
The team on 2 South exemplified extraordinary compassion, teamwork, and patient-centered care when caring for a patient with autism who had limited abilities and very few resources available for care at home. His previous living situation had become unsustainable, leading to his hospital admission, while a more appropriate placement could be arranged.
For this patient, the hospital environment was unfamiliar and frightening. Being alone in his room caused significant anxiety and distress. Recognizing his fears, the 2 South team came together to create a supportive and comforting environment. Each shift, staff made a special place for him at the nurses’ station where he could sit with the team. While he had a designated primary nurse, the patient quickly became a patient of the entire unit. Every staff member took responsibility for ensuring he felt safe, calm, and cared for.
Over several weeks, the team consistently prioritized his emotional well-being. They took the time to talk with him, reassure him, and include him in the unit's daily rhythm so he never felt alone. Their kindness went far beyond routine clinical care.
One nurse, Sinamon, demonstrated remarkable compassion by taking the patient’s clothing home to wash so he would have clean clothes during his stay. This simple yet meaningful act reflected the deep level of personal care the team showed him.
During his hospitalization, the patient’s birthday occurred— coincidentally on the same day he was scheduled for discharge to his new facility. The team felt it was important to celebrate him and make the day special. They purchased gifts, decorated the break room, and organized a birthday celebration complete with cake and ice cream. His family was invited to attend and share in the celebration before he transitioned to his new facility.
What could have been an overwhelming and frightening hospital stay became a time where this patient felt valued, supported, and loved. The team on 2 South demonstrated what nursing is truly about— compassion, dignity, and human connection.
Their collective actions transformed a difficult situation into one filled with kindness and joy. The teamwork, empathy, and dedication shown by the 2 South staff are a powerful example of the extraordinary care nurses provide every day.
This team did more than provide care—they created a sense of belonging, dignity, and joy for a patient who needed it most. That is the true spirit of the DAISY Team Award.
