December 2025 Honoree
Kala Dismuke, BSN, RN, CCRN
There was a patient in the ICU with a very poor prognosis. It was also evident that due to his condition, he was becoming extremely depressed. The patient and his family were considering palliative extubation/ comfort care (ultimately opted for this, and he passed away a few days later). Prior to his passing, Kala wanted to do something special for him. She wanted to “bring him the moon and stars,” since he had been in the hospital for over a month. Kala brought in a projector with the night sky to shine on the patient’s ceiling. It was evident that he was so grateful and enjoyed it. Kala went above and beyond to bring the patient happiness in a time when he was feeling hopeless. She is a shining example of what a wonderful nurse and person she is!
Thank you, Kala, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
