Ben took every request seriously and seemed to know intuitively that the little things make the difference when you're in the hospital.
Being at my husband's bedside for the duration of his stay meant I got to watch Ben work all day, every day. Of course, he was knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate with us. What impressed me most however was his consistency. It didn't matter how cantankerous his last patient was (my husband had a roommate in a lot of pain) or if it was 11 hours into his 12-hour shift, he was patient and calm, and gentle. It didn't matter if it was ginger ale or ibuprofen or ice or a little fan to keep my husband comfortable, Ben took every request seriously and seemed to know intuitively that the little things make the difference when you're in the hospital. I also felt really safe with him because he was totally unflappable; he never let anything interrupt him when he was giving medication, charting, or tending to my husband in any way. He just very politely asked whoever it was to hang tight. He is clearly a student of the profession and understands how even small habits help keep his patients safe. Beyond his clinical competence, which was outstanding, Ben has a superior ability to manage expectations; he was careful not to get our hopes up too much about a Sunday discharge, and while I was disappointed we'd need to stay another day, it would have been much worse if he'd just told me what I wanted to hear when I peppered him with questions. He is an exemplary professional whose calm and caring presence reassured my heart when I needed it most. Thank you Ben.
