Anamarie maintained calm and documented thoroughly. She demonstrated exceptional patient advocacy skills for the safety of the newborn in her care.
I had the pleasure of being Anamarie's clinical educator in the OB/Labor and delivery clinical setting at Abington Jefferson Health Hospital. Early on in the clinical rotation following many weeks of virtual clinical, Ana excelled with her clinical observation of a sentinel event. The event was as follows; Ana was in her assigned patient's room with her RN attempting to provide patient-centered care for a patient who identified as a "witch" and her newborn child. Ana observed what appeared to be an "abusive" grab of the newborn's arm and "flung the baby from the crib to the patient's bed". This event went unnoticed by the RN. Ana immediately reported the event to her RN and me. Ana was able to properly document and report in detail the event observed only by herself. Therefore, she was the only one able to follow through with protocal to report the event to the collaborative health care team. The sentinel event required the newborn to be removed from the room and to have a "one-to-one" assigned to the patient. Social service was involved as well as DHS to start the process to provide a safe environment for the newborn. Anamarie maintained calm and documented thoroughly. She demonstrated exceptional patient advocacy skills for the safety of the newborn in her care. During the very difficult situation, Anamarie demonstrated extraordinary concern for the mom who was clearly in a "crisis". Anamarie followed up with the nurse manager to discuss the event and to make sure all documentation and notifications were properly carried out. Once again, demonstrating her professionalism. This event did not go unnoticed by the nurse manager indicating to me separately her amazement at the job Anamarie did on her own due to being the only one witnessing the event. Anamarie has performed quite well throughout her remaining OB clinical experience. She was offered a patient care internship in the NICU and was recruited by the mother-baby nurse manager for the same opportunity. Anamarie is very focused on her learning opportunities independently and collaboratively with me. Anamarie consistently demonstrated extraordinary, compassionate care during her clinical rotation and deeply deserves the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students.
