I was admitted to 5B for vomiting blood and had to go for an EGD. I did not have any family with me as they were with my dad who was very sick. I am very familiar with healthcare as I started at MMC as a CNA years ago and continued my way through school and now I am a Family NP. The day of my procedure, Carol was in my room as I just got off the phone. I proceeded to cry and tell her the story of my dad recently being diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer and today was a bad day for him. He was being brought into the ED for pain and uncontrollable nausea. Carol looked at me with compassion, sat down with me and held my hand. Even though she had a full load of patients she took the time to sit with me and comfort me. Nursing is not always about giving the patient their meals or wrapping their wounds. It's caring for your patient in all aspects. Carol was very compassionate and never in my life will I forget her being there for me, a complete stranger to her, helping me calm down, and really showing that she cared. My stay was much better with her as my nurse, always checking not only me but also asking about my dad. Memorial and 5B should be proud to have such an excellent member on their team.
