Dear Ellyn,

I wanted to write this note of thanks while every detail was in my mind. As you can imagine being told your child has a brain lesion of undetermined origin is unbelievably frightening. Our clock has stopped since learning of this. However we feel hopeful that truly (child) has an anatomical abnormality of the pituitary gland which warrants monitoring and hopefully next year at this time he can receive growth hormone for his deficiency. We were told (child) had to go for a workup of tests, the last being a spinal tap. (Child) initially was scared. After an unsuccessful attempt last week to do the LP I guess we were all feeling "angry." I prayed so hard that our experience yesterday would be a positive one. Well, from the minute we crossed over the threshold to the sedation unit I felt the genuine love and care from all of you! The minute you walked in and introduced yourself with your "cold hands" (just like me) I knew (child) was in good hands. You exuded confidence that all would go well, which it did, and you listened to what I had to say.

Being a nurse myself I can't tell you how much I respect how you so calmly and lovingly handled the whole situation. I learned how being on the other side of the fence really feels. You feel helpless. Your gentle touch, soft voice, and confidence in the procedure set us completely at ease. I knew (child) was going to be just fine. You didn't need to give him the pentobarb which I was happy about. He was totally comfortable because he told me you talked him through the entire procedure. You kept sending out other staff members to let us know how (child) was doing, just as you promised. I know how things can get crazy during a procedure and sometimes you really can't. You actually imagined how I was feeling. You wore my shoes. Your compassion and empathy were so touching. You made the experience so much less terrifying by being genuine, professional, and so amazingly caring. Your calmness was contagious!

Spiritually I know you and I connected. I will not forget you, and are so grateful for all that you did to help (child) through! God answered my prayer that all would go well. We will await the results. I will let you know. We can only pray.

Thank you for your love and caring. You are truly a special person and a very special dedicated nurse. Thank you from all of us.

Love and thanks,

(Dad, mom, and child)
