My mother was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital via ambulance. Her nurse for that evening was Florita Lanier. She immediately got my mom settled and quickly put her at ease. Her kindness and genuine concern for patients were evident. She checked in on my mom and me several times to ensure we were comfortable. When it was time for shift change, she stopped by to tell my mom goodbye. My mother asked if she would be her nurse for the coming night shift. When she learned Florita would not be there for two nights, mom was very disappointed. Fortunately, two nights later, Florita was her nurse and my mom was very happy.
Florita was very attentive not only to my mom but to all of her patients. She never seemed too busy or stressed out because at times, my mom was a handful. My mother rarely had to press the "Call" button because Florita checked in on her often. She was extremely compassionate and caring to me since she could see that I was afraid for my mom. I initially slept in the chair next to my mom's bed. Florita asked if I wanted a cot and I told her no because I did not want to take away from her caring for patients. The next night she brought me a cot and helped me arrange the room in such a way as not to impede with my mom's space and care. My mom was moved to another unit and when she asked if Florita was going to be her nurse tonight, I told her no, she was very sad.
Florita is truly an asset to the University of Chicago Hospital. For both of us, Florita is the best nurse and should most definitely receive the DAISY Award because she is a true flower that brightens her patients stay during tough and challenging medical experiences.
