When the standard hospital gown wouldn't fit one patient's restricting cast, Rhonda Mohr had no second thought when she drew up her own pattern to create a personalized gown that would fit the patient properly. In-between lunch breaks and on her own time at home, she sewed a personalized gown that would allow the patient to move freely and be independent. After creating two of these gowns, Rhonda presented them to the patient, who said she felt much more comfortable and was very grateful to Rhonda for caring so much about her comfort.

Upon receiving the award, Rhonda said she was surprised to be recognized, because she always thought of her actions as just doing her job. "When I saw the patient struggling with her gown, I wanted to make her feel as comfortable and independent as possible. I sew and quilt, and I knew I could create something that would fit her." Rhonda says the most important aspect of her job is caring for patients in a respectful and compassionate way that allows the preservation of their dignity. For Rhonda, this was prevalent in her mind when she designed the patient's gown.
"It's a team approach that allows everyone to recognize all the needs of the patient. An extraordinary nurse comes from an extraordinary team."
