Wednesday, a group of Mee employees gathered around the entrance to the dialysis unit for a very important reason. For the first time, Mee Memorial Hospital is participating in The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Chosen as the first award recipient was Chris Manzo, a dialysis R.N.
At the presentation, Chris was honored for his clinical expertise and extraordinary compassionate care. As with most nurses, he commented, “I’m just doing my job,” but many who nominated him feel he goes above and beyond a job. One patient said, “Chris is always very helpful and knowledgeable. I trust my life with him and I am very thankful he works here.”
At the presentation he received a certificate commending him for being an "Extraordinary Nurse." The certificate reads: "In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people." He was also given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.
At the presentation, part of the refreshments were Cinnabon® cinnamon rolls which have a particular significance to the Barnes family. One day while Pat was in the hospital, he asked his family to bring him a Cinnabon® cinnamon roll plus enough for all the nurses in his unit. With the help of Cinnabon’s parent company, FOCUS Brands, The DAISY Foundation carries on this tradition by serving Cinnabons to all the nurses in the Award recipient’s unit in thanks for everything they do for their patients and families.
Said Bonnie Barnes, president and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Mee Memorial are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Lex Smith, Mee Memorial CEO, added, “Thank you for all you do for our patients here at Mee Memorial. You are very deserving of this award and I’m glad we will be able to recognize some of the outstanding nurses we have here through the DAISY award.”
