Melissa was caring for a patient over a period of a couple of days. This patient had suffered a massive stroke and prognosis was grim. The family approached Melissa inquiring about organ donation. Melissa called Gift of Life Michigan whose representative discussed the possibility of DCD (donation after cardiac death) with the family. The family decided that was the course they should take. The plan was to take the patient to the OR the next afternoon.
The morning of the donation the patient's family asked Melissa if our hospital participates in an Honor Walk to honor Gift of Life patients as they make the journey to the operating room. At that time we did not have a process in place, but Melissa worked in coordination with the clinical resource coordinator and the OR to make an Honor Walk for this family.
That afternoon, Mercy Health Saint Mary's participated in our first Honor Walk. The corridor from the ICU to the OR was lined with various hospital staff from just about every department. What a gift for this family! And what an honor to the patient and his gift to others! The family was surprised and so thankful for this last gift.
Furthermore, we have now developed a process to hold an Honor Walk for all patients whose loved ones desire it in the future.
Melissa is a true advocate not only for her patients but also for her patients' families. I am honored to have the privilege of working alongside such a caring and compassionate nurse.
