She stressed to me that it's very important to her to advocate for her patients because a lot of patients don't know that they can refuse meds/certain treatment if they want.
It is 2 am and I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with my 2nd boy and 4cm dilated- waiting to go into active labor. The on-call doctor suggested that I start Pitocin to make my contractions more frequent and stronger, but I really wanted to wait it out until the morning so my OB can deliver my baby. Nothing against the on-call doctor, I was just a lot more comfortable with my OB. My nurse Victoria came in to double-check with me if I wanted to try to wait out for Dr. Z or if I was fine with the on-call Dr. I told her I'm more comfortable with my OB and she completely understood and stressed to me that it's very important to her to advocate for her patients because a lot of patients don't know that they can refuse meds/certain treatment if they want. In my case, it was delaying Pitocin so that I could wait for my OB. The on-call resident came in shortly after and suggested that I start Pitocin to lower the risks of infection, etc. but nurse Victoria stood up for me and told the resident what I wanted. The resident then had to run it by the on-call OB, but it worked out. It might not mean much to others, but to my husband and I, she made my whole situation so much more comfortable and easygoing. Keep in mind that this is also during night shift, so I know it must not be easy to be as kind, patient, energetic, helpful, and positive - but she did it all. I appreciate it more than she knows!! Out of my 1st and 2nd delivery experience, nurse Victoria is definitely one I will remember forever. Thank you for treating me with such great care and compassion.
