I have been a nurse for 15 years and I have never been so inspired by a new nurse as I am by Tina Riley. She has been a nurse less than a year, but she has been in healthcare for a long time as a CNA. She is one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. She takes on difficult situations without hesitation and never complains. She does not do things for recognition, but for the best of the patient. Although there are many examples of her dedication there is one in particular that really sticks outs. We had a patient who did not trust anyone. She had led a hard life and was very apprehensive of even the hospital staff intentions. Tina had her for two days and by the second day she had gained the patients trust, enough that the patient was agreeable to being assessed and assisted with ADLs which had not been the case for almost a month. Because Tina was able to create this relationship with this patient, it opened her up to becoming more open to trusting other individuals and her care was able to progress from refusing all care, to allowing some providers to actually perform life saving procedures. This patient was an anxious, paranoid and self-destructing patient prior to Tinas care. It was really such a monumental impact Tina had on this patient’s quality of life. Boston Medical Center is so lucky to have a nurse who really will get to know her patients and find out how she can truly make a difference in their lives.
