I am writing to express our sincerest gratitude and recommendation of one of your nurses, Taylor Occhipinti. We delivered our second child, a beautiful daughter, in November. There was a mid-shift reassignment of nurses during the evening and our new nurse, Taylor, came into our room to complete her assessment of mom and baby. While Taylor was in the room, she noticed that our baby was grunting slightly and she asked how long she was doing this behavior. We, as parents, did not notice anything and thought this was normal newborn behavior. Taylor proceeded to do a pulse ox screening on our baby and was not happy with the results. She called a physician's assistant from the ICN and then a neonatologist who decided to send our baby to the ICN to observe overnight. Unfortunately, while she was in the ICN, she went into cardiogenic shock. She ultimately was postnatally diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, one of the most complex congenital heart defects. We are beyond thankful for our nurse Taylor who identified that something was not right with our newborn baby and was persistent with providers that she needed additional medical attention. It is evident that Taylor is well educated in identifying and treating unusual newborn symptoms. We believe that Taylor was reassigned, not out of coincidence, but to be an angel for our baby. She thankfully identified something was wrong and helped our baby receive the medical care she needed before a devastating event occurred. We will be forever thankful to our postpartum nurse Taylor who we will describe to our daughter as her guardian angel. Our daughter is doing very well post Norwood and her cardiologist is very pleased with her progress.
