My son, J, was a patient at Bronson. Sue was very respectful of his privacy. Her knowledge, organization and nursing abilities gave me the confidence to stay in "mom mode" and not feel the need to switch to "nurse mode".
J, who is a 20-year-old college student and swimmer, is new to making his own decisions. Sue made sure he understood all aspects of his care. She allowed me to guide J in his decisions when appropriate after J had given her permission to share with me. J on multiple occasions commented on how easy she was to talk with and ask questions of. He even asked her opinion on what foods were good on the menu.
Sue organized dressing changes and administration of pain medications with the surgeon, residents and J. She used humor, empathy and skill when caring for J. She knew when he needed to be pushed. She facilitated testing and the reporting of those tests without needing to be asked.
J's family and visitors were all welcomed.
J was discharged over the weekend. Sue made sure we had all the supplies, tools and clarified instructions to make a successful transition from the hospital to our home.
