Without hesitation, Sue Ann took steps to protect this child.
It was a routine day in the Operating Room one day in October, until it wasn't. A pediatric patient, under the age of five, was in for a fairly typical procedure. OR nurse Sue Ann Sholar, was prepping the child for surgery like she had hundreds of times before when she observed what appeared to be an injury to the child. Without hesitation, this nurse took steps to protect this child. Sue Ann immediately notified the appropriate leaders. The entire health care team worked together to further evaluate the child, involve authorities and ensure the patient had no other injuries, and establish a safe discharge.

It is a scenario that no one wants to encounter. It could have easily been missed. It is very clear that God intervened and put that child in the right place and Sue Ann to see a detail that saved this child from going home to an abusive, unsafe environment. We want to recognize and thank every member of the Baptist family who assisted and supported this patient. From social workers, physicians, outpatient nurses, ED nurses, security, and administration, every person made a real difference for a vulnerable child. Sue Ann stepped in the gap and was the voice for a child who had no voice, a protector of a child who had no defenses, and a strong, courageous and relentless professional who demonstrates her commitment to the care of others.
