In December, my husband had a routine appointment for a hearing aid check at ENT/Audiology. When his visit was complete, he started to rise from the chair and collapsed in full cardiac arrest. Fortunately, Sonce Pearce happened to be right outside the door and she began CPR immediately, assisted by Dr. J. Sonce has obviously been well-trained in CPR - she responded instantly to the situation and did what she had to do with vigor and determination. Her prompt and efficient action saved my husband's life.
After a week at UVM Medical Center, my husband was tranferred to The Pines in Rutland for some brief rehab and while he was there Sonce asked if she might visit him, which she did. I also had the privilege of meeting this dedicated and compassionate young lady, and all of our family is so very appreciative of her swift response to the immediate crisis and her continued thoughtfulness and kindness to us all.
I am happy to say that he continues to recover, neurologically intact after a total of 82 minutes CPR, a new pacemaker/defibrillator, and superior follow-up care by a large host of caregivers associated with RRMC.
Sonce Pearce was the first to respond - without her quick action, the outcome of this extraordinary event would have been much different. Sonce deserves the DAISY Award as she certainly exemplifies all one could hope for in nursing excellence.
