Sherrie looked up Pinterest to get an idea of a protective device that she could make for him to help anchor the tube and also cover it to help with the patient’s discomfort.
We had an 18 year old patient on the unit who was getting ready to be discharged in a few days. The patient was admitted to us from the adult unit where they had placed a PEG tube during his admission there. The patient had lost a lot of weight due to his condition and he was very conscious of the “large” tube that was hanging from his abdomen and it was also very irritating to his skin because of the weight of the tube pulling from the exit site. Sherrie looked up Pinterest to get an idea of a protective device that she could make for him to help anchor the tube and also cover it to help with the patient’s discomfort of the large visible tube hanging from his clothing. She was able to create a nice “masculine” looking cover for the tube and added Velcro to it so the patient could coil the tube so that it wasn’t visible to the public. He was so happy and confident on the day of his discharge and wore the G-Tube cover for his discharge picture. Sherrie had also made personalized pillowcases for another patient for her special Z-flow pillows. This is an example of the quality care that Sherrie shows to her patients on a daily basis and that she thinks outside the box to meet their personal needs.
