As Acting Manager of Home of the Heroes Community Living Center, Sherlon Pressley demonstrated an I CARE (integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect & excellence) attitude to both the staff she managed as well as the veterans on her unit. Sherlon led her staff through a challenging and demanding transition and developed a project that would touch the hearts of staff, patients and their families. Her leadership and critical thinking skills were evident as she led her interdisciplinary team to become involved in day to day decisions, that would place the Veterans best interest first.
Sherlon established a MIA/POW remembrance meal table in each of her day rooms. Enlisting the help of EMS, Engineering, Interior Design, Police and Volunteer service as well as her staff, the project became multidisciplinary and meaningful to everyone involved. The table consists of a tablecloth, place setting, an American flag, a reserved seat and a lemon. The table is framed by a large American flag, Veterans Administration flag and MIA/POW flag. The tables are set in the corner of each day room and serve as a powerful silent reminder of our MIA/POW veterans who have never returned to their families for another meal.
Sherlon was nominated for the DAISY award by a member of her interdisciplinary team, who admired her ability to relate and work with multiple departments on a project that touched the hearts of staff and patients alike. Her nominee wrote,
"I believe there is no better example of the hands and mind of a DAISY nurse than Sherlon Pressley."
