She is a very compassionate leader.  Mental health is one of her advocacy.  She gives us the resources and makes them readily available for all of us in the workplace.
Shelby demonstrated our Care Commitments recently during a team-building exercise.  She purchased items such as soaps, toothbrushes, socks, and hats so her team could pack bags for the homeless.  This demonstrates taking care of our community.  She also had resources for staff to reach out to for help with stress management.  This demonstrates taking care of each other.

The team packed 50 bags of items for the Stewpot homeless shelter.  She said, “Giving them bags, and just an outreach of support from us with a word of encouragement, is really important to me.  I just hope they feel cherished and loved and know that somebody is thinking about them and cares about them.”  She has only been with MCMC for a year and a half, but she has been with MHS for over 10 years.

I am nominating this Nurse Manager because of her MHS Care Commitment to care for others and care for Methodist.  She goes above and beyond with pre-assigning her staff to other units, especially when they are short a charge nurse.  At the time, although she was still considered “new” to the role of Nurse Manager, she took the time to help another new manager get acclimated to the role of managing a thirty-six-bed unit and coping with the nurse shortages as a result of the extended Covid epidemic.  She has persevered through personal issues without ever wavering or making her staff feel unsupported.  She is always committed to excellence in nursing and guides her staff with the same drive, clear vision, and strategic focus that is required to care for patients, their families, her staff, and care for Methodist.  Under her leadership, the patient experience goal has been way above the challenge goal for her unit.  Kudos to this Nurse Leader.

A breath of fresh air.  She exudes kindness and a genuine heart.  Apologizing for her casual dress, she began by explaining she had just put her children to bed and wanted to “check-in” with everyone on the night shift when we were short staffed one night.  She helped answer call lights and assisted staff in any way she could.  She is a very compassionate leader.  Mental health is one of her advocacy.  She gives us the resources and makes them readily available for all of us in the workplace.  She supports our Unit Based Council, empowers us, improves our work environment, and increases satisfaction and retention.  She enhances communication with the staff, listening intently to what is and isn’t said.  She promotes education and training to all of us so that we can be the best cardiac unit.  In all her dealings she promotes kindness and respect.  It does not matter their age, educational background, or position.  She is a rare gem and we are proud that she is our manager.
