Shawn was my nurse during a recent inpatient stay at the Spokane VA Hospital. When they delivered me to the 5th floor from the Urgent Care Clinic, she and her team were there to do my intake. They were highly professional and more than willing to assist me with whatever I needed. Shawn basically took me by the hand and showed me where things were and what I could expect. She wanted to make sure I wasn't a babe lost in the woods in this new and strange environment - to me, at least.
Shawn was the ultimate professional in all interactions with me. She made sure I was comfortable and doing what I was supposed to be doing. She did it all with a smile on her face - how she does that, I do not know. She engaged me in conversation that drew me out and helped her to better provide the care for me. This, of course, also showed me more of her personal side. She is the real deal. She wants to provide the veteran with the best care she can give. The minimums are not on her scale. By today's standards, where doing the bare minimum at whatever you do is considered "a great job," she is off the charts!
Shawn truly cares for "her veterans." She gets to know them and that is one big important aspect of caring for them - us! She made me feel like she cared about me instead of relegating me to a number on a chart, a pain in the side because I interrupted by asking for help. She is not that type of nurse! She is all in when it comes to patient care.
Shawn was a pleasure to have as a nurse. She is a rare person who can be professional and fun and effective all at the same time. She has my trust and I hope if I ever have another stay at the hospital that she will be my nurse. I do not have the words to convey how important and impressive her skills are.
