I nominate Scott for this award because I believe he embodies the very spirit of what MMC strives to be. He is compassionate and caring to his patients and their family members. Scott’s clinical skill is excellent, safe and effective.
I want to share a particular story. We admitted a 94-year old patient who appeared to be failing quickly. Her Power of Attorney provided a document stating that she did not want any life sustaining measures. We followed her wishes. During the night she awoke and began asking about her dog, Trooper. She had rescued Trooper as a puppy and was concerned that he was safe. Scott assured her that the dog was well taken care of in order to alleviate her concerns. He kept close to her, talking and holding her hand, through the night. She had no local family and it would be some time before anyone could arrive. She kept referring to Trooper as her “family”. Scott located the dog and the care taker to arrange for Trooper to be brought to the hospital. During the day shift, another nurse brought the patient down to the front of the hospital for a beautiful reunion with her beloved dog.
After the patient was moved from CCU to an acute care unit, Scott followed up on her, collaborated with the other nursing staff, social work and family to help the patient get home with full time care in order to be with her dog. She did make it home and died 5 days later with Trooper by her side. If it had not been for Scott and his extra efforts, she might have passed away in our unit without having seen her true family.
This is just one of multiple examples of Scott’s consistent “above and beyond” behavior every day he works. He is fully deserving of this award. The DAISY Award is one way that we, as his co-workers, can show our appreciation for his work every day.
