Samuel remained long after his shift to make this patient feel cared for and have a companion.
One of our nurses on 9B has always shown exceptional care and been a favorite amongst many kids on the unit. He clearly demonstrates so many aspects that make him a DAISY Nurse, especially with one of our teen patients recently. We have a patient on the unit with aggressive cancer, and he and his family have decided to no longer pursue treatment but remain at the hospital for end-of-life care.
In these situations, many of us nurses find it hard to feel like we're doing enough for these families. He, however, made this patient's day by simply playing card game after card game with him. Go fish, UNO, chess, you name it. He remained long after his shift to make this patient feel cared for and have a companion. This patient will remember these moments, as well as the nurse being one of his favorites. Even more so this patient's family will cherish the memory of him investing in their son on some of the hardest days. Samuel is appreciated on 9B!
