Sam's goal when he is at work is to take the very best care of his patients. He takes such pride in doing so. This is what nursing is about. Taking the time to make connections with people where they want you to be a part of something beautiful.
One Friday during downtime in December, Sam had a patient who was very ill. In the afternoon Sam got a call from the monitor room saying that the patient's heart rate was dropping, he went in to check on the patient and realized the patient was probably going to pass soon. He went out and found the wife to bring to the bedside and brought another nurse, in with him. Sam explained to the wife what was happening and suggested that she say whatever she felt he needed to hear in his last moments with her. He sat with the wife and his patient during this time and supported her during this moment. When the wife was done saying her goodbyes she turned to Sam asked if they knew the words to Amazing Grace and asked if they would sing with her. Without hesitation, Sam got another one of his peers and they sang a beautiful harmony of Amazing Grace.
It's little things like this that will make a lasting impact on people's lives. Thank you, Sam, for making this moment special for a family member who needed support and a friend. I am so happy to have you on my team.
