Roy was nominated by Deirdre Stewart, Cerner's Middle East Nurse Executive and a DAISY Nurse in her own right. Here is her nomination of Roy:

I want to nominate someone who has been a mentor to many great nurses in Cerner, outside Cerner and round the world. This person is simply inspirational. He is what I call "The Connector". This term was described by Malcolm Gladwell in his book "The Tipping Point" and here is the definition:

"Connectors, are the people in a community who know large numbers of people and who are in the habit of making introductions. A connector is essentially the social equivalent of a computer network hub. They usually know people across an array of social, cultural, professional, and economic circles, and make a habit of introducing people who work or live in different circles. They are people who "link us up with the world ... people with a special gift for bringing the world together."[5] They are "a handful of people with a truly extraordinary knack [... for] making friends and acquaintances".[6]

Gladwell attributes the social success of Connectors to the fact that "their ability to span many different worlds is a function of something intrinsic to their personality, some combination of curiosity, self-confidence, sociability, and energy."[7]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tipping_Point

Roy has spent his career in Cerner spanning the world and bringing people together, with no thought to the cost to himself in time, energy, travel or having to go out of his way. He knows some of the CNO's in the Middle East better than I do and they have the most incredible respect and love for him as a nursing colleague. When Roy walks into a crowd of nurses anywhere in the world, his ability to make connections with just about everyone is nothing short of astounding.

Roy leads by example - recently completing his doctorate at a time when most would be thinking of retirement, he took it on with vigor and energy on top of his already significant workload. His sponsorship and drive of the (Cerner) Magnet Award is another of the accolades which brings our communities together. He never fails to ask what CNO's coming in from Global need to be taken under his wing.

When King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah host their International Nursing Symposium every 2 years, they ask us to send Roy across as a keynote speaker. Nurses hang off his words. You would (jokingly) be forgiven for thinking of him as "The Sultan of Jeddah". I am left in amazement, as I look at the impact he has on my colleagues across the region.

He has made a huge difference in my life as a Cerner nurse. Always there, always passing along the right words, right introductions, right information and always done with the most grace and humor - it is fun to laugh and learn with him at the same time. And I will never forget when he had to jump in and bail me out of a situation which was not good - he did so with a generosity of spirit that was incredible.

And finally for introducing DAISY to Cerner and the difference that has made. The ability for us to connect with and know the founders of this wonderful Organization - in a way where they feel comfortable travelling half a world away to meet with other nurses to spread their good news, is remarkable.

For me Roy is a beacon, a hero of nursing, a solid friend and colleague and just the warmest most humorous person I have had the pleasure of working with in my long nursing career. For everything he brings to the nursing profession and to his friends and colleagues he is the essence of what I consider to be a DAISY Nurse.

It gives me the utmost pleasure to nominate Roy Simpson for a DAISY award!

We at The DAISY Foundation are proud to call Roy our Friend, and we are thrilled that his colleagues feel so strongly about him to honor him with The DAISY Award.
