It was like having a mom who seemed to genuinely care for my well-being but was in the hospital with me the whole time.
I was a patient at NYU Winthrop Hospital last week. I had surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy as well as my right fallopian tube and ovary. During surgery, I lost a lot of blood and needed a lot of care. I was brought back to a room and eventually cared for by my night nurse, Rena Rush. Instantly, Ms. Rush's presence made me feel comfortable. She had this air about her that just makes it seem like everything is easy breezy while also knowing that she takes her patient care seriously. This was my first pregnancy and my first time even being in a hospital. I was so scared to spend the night and was in a lot of pain. Nurse Rena was very knowledgeable about my situation. She would make sure I was aware of everything that was happening and when a doctor was coming to see me. Being that I am normally an anxious person, I loved that she was giving me these heads up, I don't know if she sensed that, but she was just so attentive. When I was embarrassed about her having to change my catheter, Rena didn't even give it a second thought. It was like having a mom who seemed to genuinely care for my well-being but was in the hospital with me the whole time. Rena knew how eager I was to take a lap around to get my body moving, she had so much to do, but she didn't even leave, even though her shift was almost over until I got that walk in. I expressed to her my sadness and my concerns for future pregnancies and she assured me it would be okay and even shared her own experience, so I didn't feel alone. Before Rena left, she checked in on me one last time and left me with well wishes. I am so beyond grateful for Nurse Rena that night and she should be recognized for her phenomenal patient care. I hope every patient in a hospital gets a Nurse Rena because I don't think I would have been nearly as brave or comfortable without her wonderful patient care.
