Thanks to her persistence and compassion, she was finally able to get the doctor to understand and put in orders for stronger pain meds. If not for Phyllis, I have no idea what, if anything, might have been done for me.
Midway through the dayshift, the nurse I had since 7am left, and the nurse who took over for her was Phyllis. I immediately felt very comfortable and relaxed with her due to her sweet, kind, and caring personality. I made her aware right away that the pain in my lower back, which radiated to the hip, groin, femur, and down to the foot, which started the night before, had steadily intensified and was currently to the point that it was almost unbearable. She said as soon as my pain meds were due, she would bring it. Unfortunately, less than an hour later, the pain had become excruciating. I was sobbing and nauseous! I could not stay still because not one position would allow me to be even slightly comfortable. Earlier that morning I attempted two or three times to talk with the doctor about the increasing pain and not knowing why it started so suddenly but she repeatedly dismissed what I was trying to say. I am so grateful and feel blessed that Phyllis took over my care because she strongly advocated for me when she saw how much pain I clearly was in. Each time she called the doctor to ask for stronger pain meds. Each time she came to tell me what the doctor said, she'd apologize that she couldn't get the doctor to do anything more to help me, even though she had nothing whatsoever to apologize for. Over a three-hour period that the pain I was having I was crying so hard I was struggling to breathe and was desperately trying not to vomit. After seeing I was very close to my breaking point, Phyllis told me she was going to contact the doctor again (for the fourth or fifth time) and "do everything possible to make her understand" that I could not handle anymore and that she couldn't stand to watch me suffer the way I was. Thanks to her persistence and compassion, she was finally able to get the doctor to understand and put in orders for stronger pain meds. If not for Phyllis, I have no idea what, if anything, might have been done for me. It’s obvious Phyllis loves being a nurse and taking care of her patients. She makes sure they know she has their best interests at heart, and she'll do everything she can to take care of whatever they need. Also, she takes her time when she's talking with you instead of rushing off. It feels very good to know your nurse is not only listening to you, but you are heard. Phyllis is not just an asset to BS&W but an absolute blessing to her patients!!
