My 84-year-old Mom had open-heart surgery to repair/replace 2 valves, complete 3 bypasses and to clear her carotid artery. It was an 8-hour surgery, followed by 2 more hours to stop bleeding in her chest. When we were finally able to see her in the CVICU, it had been over 14 hours of anxious waiting.
Immediately we were comforted by Paula Romeo's calm, professional and reassuring voice, explaining the specifics of the care she was receiving and what to expect in the coming hours. Friday morning Paula was there again, answering our questions and focusing on Mom's care, explaining the ups and downs of her recovery and quieting our fears and concerns.
As mom began to have more conscious moments Saturday, Paula handled her with skill, compassion, kindness, and gentle strength. Paula was able to know just how to communicate with Mom, and Mom could tell that she cared about her progress. Mom calls her "an angel."
Sunday and Monday Paula was with Mom, and all of us - because she is not just Mom's nurse, she is a nurse for our whole family. She listens, consoles, explains, quiets our fears, laughs with us, celebrates Mom's gains, and encourages us through the setbacks. Paula Romeo is an extraordinary nurse and a consummate professional.
