Patrick made everything better, and he made it look easy and normal.
Besides making me feel comfortable and safe in the ED while dealing with a scary infectious process, Patrick also gave me what I called my gift from Patrick which was an excellent IV access in my left hand, after about 18 other sticks by various other people during the previous 3 days getting care for this condition. When I was discharged, my nurse then commented that it was admirable that the IV he put in lasted through all the medications for my whole stay. It never hurt, and I just think Patrick is absolutely amazing for giving me the gift of a pain-free IV. I've always had a lot of trouble with good access to my veins since I was a little girl, and if I could afford to hire Patrick to follow me around and place IVs for the rest of my life, I would! (I mean, I hope to not need many, but you guys are vampires!) Also, Patrick mentioned briefly some fun social activities he was looking forward to, and honestly, that kind of made me feel cheered up and more willing to fight the disease so I can go do fun things too, instead of feeling depressed about being in a windowless room underground with a potentially life-threatening condition. It probably wasn't too memorable for him, but both of these things really helped me a lot!! I think he deserves recognition for fulfilling his nurse role so much better than I have come to expect (mostly because of the limitations of my body on making their job easy). Patrick made everything better, and he made it look easy and normal. I want to say thank you, and hopefully, my long-winded teenage-diary-entry-sounding nomination gets him some kind of good.
