The SSMH Nursing team has worked tirelessly to improve safety and communication among the staff. The team has implemented tools and strategies to ensure the staff is up to date on facility safety issues and ensures that a direct line of communication exists from the staff nurse to the CNO. Safety huddles have enabled teams to communicate issues, respond to safety concerns in real-time, and identify common concerns across departments. Frontline staff was involved in revising tools and methods to ensure staff buy-in and sustainment. The improvements have impacted team communication, development of safety checklists, and improvement in Culture of Safety Survey. During the November 2019 Joint Commission Survey, the communication improvement project was deemed a "Best Practice" and the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association 2020 ASHNHA Patient Safety Award "Innovation in Transformation of Patient Safety- High Reliability" in the small hospital category.
