Nanette leaned over him toward the end of her shift and gave him a small peck on his cheek (in a mask of course) and her voice cracked as she told him to tell her husband "Hi and that she loved him" when my Grandpa went to heaven.
My grandpa was admitted to NEA Baptist in September and began a quick transition to the next realm. He started declining and his dayshift nurse was Nanette. She spent all of her shift ensuring that my grandpa was comfortable, peaceful, and clean. She went above and beyond her calling of Nursing to ensure that my Mom stayed informed, my grandpa was cared for and Nanette exemplified what a true nurse is supposed to be. She spent time with him when I know she was busy because she was the charge nurse that day as well. She advocated for him and got him medication to ease his transition and kept my Mom informed. I'm a nurse myself and when I asked my Mom what was going on, she let me talk to Nanette and Nanette did not sugar coat anything, she let me know exactly what was going on and I knew then that I had to head to him immediately. She went above and beyond to make sure that family was able to come to visit even though COVID policy states otherwise so that we could spend the rest of his time on earth with him.
She leaned over him toward the end of her shift and gave him a small peck on his cheek (in a mask of course) and her voice cracked as she told him to tell her husband "Hi and that she loved him" when my Grandpa went to heaven. She held his hand and said she would never forget him and I know she was speaking the truth. In my 5 years of being a nurse, I have never met anyone who exemplified what a nurse is until I met Nanette. I will never forget her and what she did for my grandpa and my family and I will strive to be the kind of nurse that she is.
