The pharmacist was about to discard the medication, but Khalil suggested holding and not wasting the drug.
I nominated Mr. Khalil Adel Dagher for his contribution to the Day Case Unit, notably for his exemplary performance as a strong patient advocate. He ensures patients received medications in a timely manner and most importantly improves patient outcomes. Mr. Khalil’s inter-professional collaborative care was effective which resulted in the delivery of much-needed services and even save the hospital medication cost.

Mr. Khalil collaborated with the physician, pharmacists, and patients regarding the Zoledronic acid IV- administration for four patients. Their appointments were canceled due to the non-availability of the said drugs. Mr. Khalil discussed to the pharmacist that 1-vial could be prepared for the 4-patients; this will saves cost, doses, and not delay patient medications. His suggestion was accepted by the Pharmacist who brought the drug from another hospital. Mr. Khalil communicated with the physician and phoned 4  patients to come to the unit on the same day. The outcome was that the patients happily received the Zoledronic acid infusion and prevented further delay.

In another situation, a patient was regularly receiving Rituximab infusion (expensive medication). Physician ordered to administer the drug and the primary nurse confirmed to the pharmacy to prepare the medication. After the pharmacist prepared the medication, the doctor changed his mind and prescribed another drug as per the patient's request. The patient decided to receive the Covid19 vaccine first instead of the Rituximab. The pharmacist was about to discard the medication, but Khalil suggested holding and not wasting the drug. Instead, he arranged immediately with the physician, IV-pharmacist that the said medication was given to another patient who was on the waiting list. The outcome was that the patient received the Rituximab infusion.
