I am nominating Michael Smith to recognize him for his excellence in nursing care and for being a role model that everyone at IOH should look up to. We first met in 2011 during orientation. Nursing is his second career. I quickly noted that Mike was very bright and a quick learn. He studied each piece of equipment I showed him, repeated information back to me that I had just taught him, asked appropriate questions, many that I had never thought of myself. Though sometimes people with numerous questions can make an Educator feel threatened, Mike's questions never made me feel that way, they only made me feel like he truly cared and truly wanted to know. One time, Mike had just taken my EKG Class to prepare to take ACLS. Mike had questions regarding monitors in PACU. We took a walk down to PACU together after class. I was giving him some general information regarding the central station monitor. Mike noticed and pointed out that a patient was in atrial fibrillation, a rhythm he had just learned that day. After closer inspection, I confirmed that he was correct and in fact, the patient was in a new onset of atrial fibrillation. Regarding ACLS, in class, Mike not only excels in both his written test and "Mega Code" scenarios, but when participating in quarterly "Mock Codes" Mike is always quick with the correct answers and actions.
