During a particularly busy shift our medical team admitted a patient with multiple complexities to our medical floor. This patient often received care at a larger tertiary center, so the mother was already somewhat nervous and apprehensive about the admission. Melissa was precepting a fellow RN during this admission and expertly guided this individual throughout the shift. She recognized that this type of patient might be intimidating but also recognized the value of aiding her trainee to be assertive when addressing the physicians and clearly communicating concerns as needed. She helped foster a sense of independence and confidence while at the same time being empathetic to the stress of the situation.

Melissa also greatly contributed to the care of this patient by being observant and responsive to the needs of the mother. Often, in patients with greater complexity, a great deal of time and effort is spent addressing the various medical needs of the patient, and we can forget the impact the hospital stay has on the family. Melissa recognized that the mother was experiencing a great deal of stress and anxiety throughout the night. Realizing the impact that maternal stress can have on not only the mother but also the patient, Melissa took time out of a busy night to listen to the mother with an empathetic ear so she could understand the origin of her fears and frustrations. She provided a calming reassurance and took measures to delineate a plan of action for the mother with regard to communication of her concerns. Most importantly, Melissa utilized the tool of touch and provided a great source of comfort to this mother through an extended hug, not releasing until the mother was ready to do so.
