I wish there could have been a different outcome, however, I believe because of Melissa we were able to connect in a way to help save so many others in the future.
I hope I can do this moment Justice by telling the great impact of what this nurse has and will have on the City of St. Louis. Unfortunately, there was a child who opted the attempt to end her life because of the hurt and pain of being bullied for over 3 years. One week before the start of her high school years journey, she failed in a severe suicide attempt. This landed her on life support in St. Louis Children’s ICU. I was personally called to help disarm some of the trauma that her mother was experiencing and this led me to pray over her daughter one late night. After seeing the result of someone’s actions and words causing another to bring this kind of harm to themselves, I was instantly inspired to try to do something! I know it was a long shot, but I wanted to partner with Children’s to introduce a bullying initiative in this child’s honor to help mentally and physically support all others who may experience this in life. I asked to speak to a nurse in charge and I was introduced immediately to Melissa Shelton. I explained who I was and what I wanted. She, without hesitation, began to take note. It was clear that she displayed care, concern, and compassion for the patient and her fight for life. With tears in her eyes, she promised to pass my information along through the proper channels. I believe she understood that this ask was bigger than just one life but an opportunity to save so many others.

Less than 48 hours later, I was contacted and met with a team of people to move the initiative forward the day before I spoke at the victim’s funeral. I wish there could have been a different outcome, however, I believe because of Melissa we were able to connect in a way to help save so many others in the future.

I also know firsthand that the mother’s joy was restored instantly when I announced the plans at her daughter’s service. It is people like Melissa that use their position to provide help, resources, and hope!

In my opinion, she deserves to be recognized.
