With the fast-paced world, we are living in today, it is hard to come across individuals like May whose kindness, compassion, and trusting spirit move you.
Maya Aoun is an overall amazing person, colleague, and friend. May shines in clinical and has been my clinical partner throughout this semester. We first met when we were new ducklings in the field. It was a real struggle for us. Even if she is doing her own work, May always finds time to help me and my other clinical classmates. During one of our clinical weeks, I got so busy with our assignment that I realized I had not seen May, so I looked around the unit for her. I come to find she was being a busy bee, and the reason she was so busy was that I found out she took the opportunity to learn more. The primary nurse asked if anyone wanted to see the process of blood transition, and May did not hesitate and took the challenge, went to the blood bank with the nurse. She went above and beyond by not only helping the nurse but also taking the experience and summarizing it to everyone. We already learned the process in lecture, but as we all know, school versus actual practice can be different. By having May teach everyone, she not only helps others but also herself. I was so proud of my partner and seeing her shine, it was amazing because she is always ready to help. She always makes sure the patients are ok when she answers the call light, and I am so proud to nominate her.

I do not know where to begin when describing the amazing individual that May is. I had the privilege of having her in my clinical rotation last semester and was able to witness the genuine care and compassion she had towards not only her patients but also her peers. She is always looking out for her classmates and goes out of her way to help them if she knows they need it. Last semester she took an interest in me when I was not doing so well. She was able to help me out tremendously and coached me back into a safe spot. Like runners in a race, she had slowed down for me and gave me the water and encouragement I needed to cross the finish line. She continues to be a tremendous help to me this semester, reaching out and assisting me even though none of our classes overlap. With the fast-paced world, we are living in today, it is hard to come across individuals like May whose kindness, compassion, and trusting spirit move you. Just as the DAISY symbolizes purity, May is pure in all she says and does. She will always hold the DAISY Award in my heart, and I am so privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know such a loving individual in this program.

By demonstrating a commitment, advocacy, and trust for the patients while also being the shoulder to lean on for colleagues, I want to recognize Maya. I have known Maya since the day we both started the nursing program. We both had an incredible professor to teach us the fundamentals of Nursing. New nursing students who have never set foot in the hospital always had a hesitancy, but not May. I remember the first time we ever saw a patient with a tracheostomy, we were not taught yet about the nursing care for this kind of patient, but May decided to try her best in helping her patient. Like most of us know now, tracheostomy care is vital for the prevention of VAP and the comfort of the patient. With the guidance of our clinical professor, May stayed a long time with the patient by making sure the patient was clean and comfortable to the best of her ability. I would not have been as successful as I have been the last two semesters without her. May has an exceptional skill in precision note-taking, and with my and my other colleague’s insight, we all helped each other succeed in the program. May not only helps her other colleagues with understanding the concepts of nursing, but she is also a great listener when we struggle. Maya Aoun is a promising woman who will soon be a registered nurse. This field is full of hardships, sacrifice, and pain, physically and emotionally; however, May is a beacon of light to any nurse who has a chance to work with her. People like her are hard to come by because there are a handful of others that would lend a hand while they themselves are just staying afloat in this crazy torrential storm we call the medical field. Every time Maya walks out of her patients’ rooms or even if she was just passing by a calling light, the patients are always smiling or laughing because they recognize the genuineness in her care. “Caring is the essence of nursing”, and what better way to embody that quote than Maya Aoun.
