Matt, having previously had dogs of his own, acknowledged the importance of the visit. He empathized with the sister.
We had a patient admitted to the unit for overnight observation after a routine scheduled procedure. She was expected to stay overnight in the ICU and then be discharged home the following day. Unfortunately, she had an unexpected complication, whereby she rapidly deteriorated and became unresponsive and not expected to survive the next few days. Her family, especially her younger sister was in shock and disbelief. They were desperate for a glimmer of hope for her recovery. The patient's sister requested she bring the patient's pet dog to the bedside. She hoped that the feel of the dog's fur would somehow awaken her.

I was in charge that day and asked for Matt's help with this. It was against hospital policy to allow pet visitors in the ICU. Matt, having previously had dogs of his own, acknowledged the importance of the visit. He empathized with the sister. He said he would've wanted someone to bring his dog to his bedside too. He said he understood the importance of the visit to the sister's healing. Matt contacted his Manager, Director, and CNO. He explained the situation and how although the visit would probably not help the patient; it would most definitely comfort the patient's sister. Allowing her to feel like "everything had been done".

Matt was able to get permission for the dog to be brought to the bedside. The patient's sister brought the dog to the patient's bedside and placed the patient's hand on his little furry head. The dog licked her hand, but the patient did not awaken. They stayed at the bedside for several hours. After some time, the patient's sister requested we proceed with withdrawal of care. She thanked Matt for his help and said that her mind was at peace. Matt went above and beyond to help this family member. He was able to provide her some comfort during a very difficult time.
