This is to inform you about a very special person in my life, Mary Novak. Many years ago, a miracle occurred. I survived cardiac arrest. However, at the time, after coming out of a medically induced coma, I didn't think it was a miracle. I was informed by the doctor that I was a candidate for an ICD. I was totally against having the device implanted and became depressed. Then the real miracle happened, and her name was Mary Novack. She came to my room, sat at my bedside, and told me about some of her personal family cardiac issues. She spent over an hour with me, explaining that I was only 63 years old, too young not to be around for my family and friends, especially my daughter who performed CPR to keep me alive before the ambulance arrived. Because of her expertise in dealing with people who have cardiac issues, her kindness, understanding, and compassion, she convinced me that having an ICD implanted was the right thing to do. Mary said that the ICD would be my guardian angel, which proved correct a few months ago. However, the real angel here is Mary Novak, RN, a very special person whom I visit every year to show my appreciation for the extra years I get to spend with my family. She cared enough to convince me that my survival was a miracle and that I needed the ICD.
